Go for coordinating colors not outfits

Gone are the day where every person in the family wore the same blue jeans and white t-shirt.  Instead, pick a couple of colors and pick clothes that will fit in the color scheme. Try to coordinate rather than matching every person to the same outfit/color.

If you are having a difficult time figuring out colors, try beginning with one of person.

Use accessories to break up the color palette

Accessories not just add to the dress but they can be fun use in images. Scarfs, necklaces, bangles, hats all some amazing interest to the pictures.

Sometimes children will want to bring their favorite toy or stuffed animal to the photoshoot. If that occurs, take a few images with and without so you have choices.

Texture are also amazing in photos. Use texture from belts or scarves to include little more to the picture.

Follow a theme

When picking outfits for a family photoshop, ensure that every person is following the same theme. If formal outfits are their jam, then go for it.

There is something to be said about pretty kids in a bowtie and suit. They look definitely adorable. If casual is more relax, then ensure every person is following that theme.

The final thing you want for dad to wear suit while the kids are in toddler dress and jeans. The family images will look extremely disjoined.

How to match outfits to the background

If you are taking images in front of a backdrop, consider what your customers are wearing. If you are outdoors, greenery is a charming backdrop but you will need to think about dress colors so that pastels they match that greenery.

Muted and pastels tones look amazing against bright  green trees or grass. Sometimes foliage also gives a color to pictures so keep that in mind when picking popreal outfits colors.
