LA CASA NELLA PRATERIA oltre la fiction, la memoria autentica del coraggio e della perseveranza in South Dakota  

Facciamo un salto nel 1862. Con la legge Homestead Act il governo americano consentiva ad ogni capo famiglia l'opportunità di appropriarsi di una sessantina di ettari di terre di proprietà del governo purché vi si stabilissero per almeno 5 anni e pagassero l'onere amministrativo.  Tanta fu la pubblicità per creare poderi e fattorie sulle terre del Dakota Territory da riempire la mente di giovani uomini e donne che cercavano avventura e fortuna. Il desiderio di possedere la terra diventò un sogno per molti.  Nel 1880 la Dakota Central Railroad spinse i confini ferroviari ancor più verso ovest, toccando piccole comunità oltre Volga e Huron nel South Dakota orientale, e dette origine a tanti piccoli villaggi che sorsero come funghi: Arlington, Lake Preston, De Smet, Manchester, Iroquois, Cavour. Molti di questi insediamenti contavano su una paio di negozi, un affittacamere, stalle ed un paio di baracche aggiunte. Sciami di coloni vi giunsero dall'est degli Stati Uniti ed anche dall'Europa. De Smet  in South Dakota sorse appunto nel 1880 quale classica colonia nella prateria. Contava un general store, una banca, un albergo, un saloon, il giornale locale, la chiesa ed una falegnameria.  All'epoca chi vi arrivava per possedere la terra, costruiva una baracca, ossia una claim shanty.  Nei libri di Laura Ingalls Wilder si parla di “una piccola stanza, tutta barricata da cima a fondo, con un tetto inclinato da farla assomigliare ad una casetta"  (Wilder, 1939).  Se oggi passeggiate sulla Calumet Avenue a De Smet potete immaginarla nel 1880.

Poi ancora, la storica prima chiesa congregazionale organizzata da Charles Ingalls nel 1880, con il primo servizio religioso della città che si svolse nella sua casa il 29 febbraio 1880.

Meritano un'escursione la serie di laghi che contornano: lo Spirit Lake ed  il Silver Lake.

Con l'auto estendete l'esplorazione delle praterie orientali del South Dakota, raggiungendo Brookings a circa 60km dove si visitano il South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum che illustra degnamente il retaggio agricolo della regione e il  South Dakota Art Museum con gallerie che esibiscono opere di artisti Nativi Americani oltre a circa 140 dipinti tra i più belli di Dunn. A sud di Madison un altro piccolo gioiello storico mostra la vita rurale di molti anni fa in South Dakota: Prairie Villagecon i suoi 40 edifici originali presenta la vita di 100 anni fa come si svolgeva sulla Main Street. La Lawrence Welk Opera House, la centenaria giostra a vapore Herschell Spillman con le figure lignee intagliate a mano che s'impennano sulle note della musica calliope. La scuola di campagna, le chiese ed una delle uniche carrozze ferroviarie viaggianti che portavano in giro per il paese la buona novella grazie ai missionari. “Emmanuel” è nel South Dakota Register and the National Register of Historic Places ed è la più antica cappella Battista su rotaia tra le tre rimaste in tutti gli Stati Uniti.  Viaggiò con il missionario e la sua famiglia a bordo dal 1893 al 1942, per predicare ed insegnare il Gospel, il Vangelo. Le migliaia di coloni che avevano lasciato l'est del paese nel 1880 per conquistarsi un pezzo di  Wild West erano devoti cristiani,  privati del luogo di culto. La cappella su rotaia lunga 18 m, completamente costruita in legno di quercia e metallo,  fu inaugurata a Denver, Colorado nel  1893 per servire l'ovest ed il nord ovest degli Stati Uniti fino al 1940, quando furono costruite chiese permanenti. Il Village è circondato da circa 5 km di rotaie della Herman & Milwaukee Railroad. L'esperienza in queste località della prateria del South Dakota, vi ricongiunge al coraggio ed alla perseveranza della gente che ha saputo crearsi una nuova vita e ha saputo gioire delle piccole cose.

Denver, Colorado  è la porta d'accesso ufficiale all'immensa regione del Great American West.

City of Rocks National Reserve, Idaho

La City of Rocks National Reserve è una delle  migliori avventure dell’Idaho meridionale. Quest’area protetta di 5.830 ettari si trova all’estremità meridionale delle Albion Mountains e vanta torreggianti pinnacoli, guglie e volte rocciosi.  Scalatori da ogni parte del mondo giungono qui per conquistare le cime che presentano vari livelli di difficoltà. La riserva è rinomata anche per escursionismo, mountain biking e bird watching. I migranti in viaggio lungo il California Trail descrissero le rocce qui con dettagli molto vividi come  “una città con alti pinnacoli”, “torri di roccia” e “città silenziosa.”

Glacier National Park, Montana           

Nominato parco nazionale nel 1910, è una terra di catene montuose scolpite da fiumi ghiacciati preistorici. Vanta prati alpini, fitte foreste, cascate, circa 50 ghiacciai e 200 scintillanti laghi. I panorami che si possono ammirare dall’unica strada che attraversa il parco - Going-To-The-Sun Road -  sono spettacolari e di sicuro il paradiso per ogni fotografo. Nel parco, che ha un’estensione di oltre 4140 km², esistono relativamente pochi chilometri di strade, in modo da preservare la sua bellezza naturale, primitiva ed incontaminata.  

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

Ubicato tra i colorati canyon delle Badlands del North Dakota occidentale, questo è un parco nazionale che merita a buon titolo di essere inserito nella vostra lista dei futuri viaggi. Senza la folla e le code tipiche di alcuni parchi nazionali, è facile scoprire qui un senso di libertà. Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Questo straordinario paesaggio in South Dakota è caratterizzato da un labirinto di canyon, collinette, pinnacoli e guglie.  Tra i numerosi fossili, qui sono stati ritrovati scheletri di cavalli con zampe a tre dita e leoni dalle zanne a sciabola. La fauna abbonda nei quasi 10.000 ettari e spesso si possono fare avvistamenti durante una passeggiata o mentre si percorre la Badlands Loop Scenic Byway. Qui vivono moltissimi animali, come le pecore bighorn, bisonti, volpi e la specie protetta del furetto dalle zampe nere. Spesso si avvistano antilopi e cervi che camminano lungo la strada e nei pressi delle aree di sosta. Non meravigliatevi, poiché il parco vanta oltre 25.000 ettari di terre protette non abitate.

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Gli oltre 125.000 ettari del Grand Teton comprendono lussureggianti vallate, prati di montagna, laghi alpini e le svettanti cime del Teton Range. Se location iconiche come Mormon Row e Moulton Barns (qui a destra) sono tra le location più fotografate nel parco, le cime celestiali del Grand Teton forniscono lo scenario perfetto per gli amanti della natura, per gli appassionati di outdoor e per tutti i viaggiatori che vogliono esplorare gli incredibili paesaggi del parco.
